what 的特殊用法

网友问：有这样一个句子：Today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call “modern art”. What在句中是什么意思？作何种成分？　　

本句中，they 指代the Impressionist paintings。意思是：今天，印象派作品被公认为我们所说的“现代艺术”的开端。　　

人教版新课标英语课本中，类似的句子曾出现过多次。例如：　　

I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece”. 我生活在你们所说的“古希腊”。　　

以上两句中，what we call和what you call用为一个句式，意为“我们所说的（所谓的）”和“你们所说的（所谓的）”。从教学和翻译角度，我们可以把what we/you call按定语看待，分别修饰 modern art 和 Ancient Greece。但是，实际上 what we call “modern art”  和what you call “Ancient Greece” 都是名词性从句：第一句 modern art 是call 的宾语，what是 modern art 的宾补。第二句 Ancient Greece 是 call 的宾语，what是 Ancient Greece 的宾补。问题是，what 在这里该怎么理解？能不能翻译成带有疑问的“什么”？回答显然是不行的。再看一个句子：　　

His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table.（他的眼睛注视着兄弟俩饭桌上的残羹剩饭）。这是美国著名作家马克·吐温名作The Million Pound Bank Note上的一个句子。说的是一个穷困潦倒的美国青年，在英国富人家里看到的情况。从句子意思看，what不像是疑问，不能译成“什么东西”。那么，这些what 究竟是什么意思呢？　　

what的主要作用有3个（当然还有其他用法，如引导感叹句）：　　

1. 充当疑问代词，引导特殊疑问句。　　

What are they talking about over there?　　

2. 充当连接代词，引导名词性从句（如宾语从句），仍然表示“疑问”概念。　　

I don’t know what they are talking about over there.　　

3. 充当“复合关系代词”，引导名词性从句（如宾语从句），不表示“疑问”概念。　　

“复合关系代词”，是what的一个非常重要的用法，以上三个句子中的what就是此种用法。下面再看两个句子：　　

(1) We should do what the teacher tells us to do. 我们应该做老师叫我们做的事情。　　　　

(2) He isn't what he was ten years ago.他现在不是十年前的那个他了。　　　　

句 (1) 中的what 实际上就等于everything that，the things that或the thing that，表示“物”的概念；句 (2) 中的what实际上就等于 the person that，表示“人”的概念。这两句话解释了what复合关系代词的用法：它既充当了先行词，又充当了关系代词；既可以表示“物”，也可以表示“人”。　　　　

从语法作用看，what引导的这个句子叫做名词性从句，因为它起的作用就相当于一个名词。那么，what从句在主句中做什么成分呢？请看例句：　　　　

What we need is their help. （做主语）我们所需要的就是他们的帮助。　　　　

He has got what he wants. （做宾语）他得到了他想要的（东西）。　　　　

That is what I heard on the bus.（做表语）那就是我在公共车上听到的（故事）。　　　　

what 本身在它引导的从句中做什么成分呢？请看例句：　　　　

What appears difficult may be very easy. （做主语）看起来很难的事情也许很容易。　　　　

What we liked most was his jokes.（做宾语）我们最喜欢的（东西）就是他讲的笑话。　　　　

China is not what she was more than 50 years ago.（做表语）中国已不是50多年前的中国了。　　　　

在 His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table. 中，what 相当于 the food that, what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table 整个句子是 stare at 的宾语从句，而what又作了宾语从句的主语，of the brothers' dinner 做 what 的定语。
