关于序数词的问题

最近，在《英语答疑网》上，有专家在参考了《牛津双解》后，解答网友提问时指出，“序数词作表语，表名次时，是名词。”《牛津双解》这个说法自相矛盾，既然是序数词，怎么又称它为名词？这是其一。既然是名词用了单数形式，为何没有加冠词？显然，不能自圆其说。毫无疑问，前面不加冠词，而且后面没有名词时，这时的first，second是形容词无疑。以下是例句：

We are ninetieth in the competition so far. 目前我们竞赛名次是19。

The computers are all first. 这些电脑都是一等的（一流的）。

The city is second with a population of 1,000,000 in the province. 这个城市有一百万人口在本省名列第二。　　

就像最高级的用法一样，形容词的最高级作表语，为何可以省去冠词the？是因为它本身就是一个形容词。例如：This way is best.

形容词作定语时为何不可以省去冠词the？是因为名词前需要加定冠词，而不是最高级需要冠词。This is the best way.

词典对词性的定义，有时候是错误的，是脱离了语言实际的。例如：nowhere一词，几乎所有的词典都规定为副词，但是，情况果真如此吗？

He had nowhere to call home.他根本没有可称为家的地方。

We found nowhere to spend the night.我们未找到地方过夜。

以上两句nowhere分别作had和found的宾语，而且第一句还做了call的宾语。我们能说副词作宾语吗？显而易见，这时的nowhere是表示地点的“名词”。

我认为，英语中有“序数”这个概念，不应该有“序数词”这个词性。

要么，我们有如下两种选择，只能挑选一种，不能兼而有之。否则，有关序数的词性和概念问题，将永远自相矛盾，不能自圆其说。

一、英语中有表示“序数”这个概念的词，如first, second, third, tenth等，但没有“序数词”这个词性。因为这类词的词性至少有3种：

1. 跟冠词（a, the）连用时，是代词（或名词）。如：

My mother entered the local flower show just for fun and got a first.

She is always the first to arrive.

He was the first to reach the top of the hill.

Tom was the first on the scene in tragedy.

2. 之后跟了名词或作表语时，是形容词。如：

She is always the first girl to come.

This is my second trip to London.

The population of India is second to that of China.

3. 修饰动词或其他成分做状语时，是副词。如：

I do not remember who spoke first, but we all expressed the same opinion

No matter it is windy or rainy, he always comes first.

First of all she just smiled, then she started to laugh.

二、承认英语中有“序数词”这个词类，但该词类可以做句子的主语或宾语，定语或表语，以及状语等。既然称它为“序数词”，就不能再称它为“名词，代词，形容词或副词”。一个词类只有一个名称，不能有多个名称，自相矛盾！
