clothes与clothing的用法区别

▲两者均可表示衣服的统称，但clothes是一个没有单数形式的复数名词（永远是复数），而clothing则是一个没有复数形式的单数名词（永远不可数）。如：

1. clothes

She wears beautiful clothes. 她穿着漂亮的衣服。

She likes to wear expensive clothes. 她喜欢穿价格昂贵的衣服。

She bought a suit of clothes yesterday. 她昨天买了一套衣服。

He never changes his clothes; his trousers are filthy. 他从不换衣服，他的裤子污秽不堪。

2. clothing

Food and clothing are basic necessities. 衣食是基本的生活必需品。

People wear warm clothing in cold weather. 天冷时人们穿暖和的衣服。

▲比较而言，clothes的含义比较具体，而clothing的含义则比较抽象。如：

Hang the clothes on the line. 把这些衣服挂在晾衣绳上。

Our clothing protects us against the cold. 我们的衣服可以御寒。

▲若不考虑其细微区别，两者常可换用。如：

Warm clothes are [clothing is] a must in the mountains. 在山里厚衣服是必不可少的。

另外，在a wolf in sheep’s clothing（披着羊皮的狼）这一习语中，习惯上用clothing。如：

They were our worst enemies—wolves in sheep’s clothing. 他们是我们最危险的敌人——是披着羊皮的狼。
