the most important之后可以不跟名词作主语

■薄冰著《薄冰英语语法指南》(外语教学与研究出版社2006年1月第1版)p698：

有一读者问：《英语沙龙》某期“英语诊所”举有这样一句错话：

(1)The most important is that you try your best.

应改为：

(2) The most important thing is that you try your most.(笔者注：most应为best)

而在另一期则有这样一句话：

(3) The most important is Beowulf, a long epic of 3,182lines.

我想请教这句话是否也是错句？

■当the most important 意为the most important one时，one 是可以省去的。上述句(3)即属于这种情况，所以是正确的。顺便说一下，这里省去的one=a piece of poetry。上述句(1)中的the most important其后并不是省去了one，而是漏掉了thing，所以是错误的。

■笔者认为薄老的说法值得商榷。句(1)中的the most important完全可以看作形容词的最高级作主语(中外工具书中均有此用法的论述)，退一步讲，the most important可以看作其后省略了thing，而不是薄老所说“漏掉了thing”。无论怎么说句(1)都是正确的，没有必要改为句(2)，当然(2)也是正确的。

请看形容词的最高级作主语的例证：

1. 章振邦主编《新编英语语法》(修订本)上册(上海译文出版社1989年7月第1版)p666：某些形容词与定冠词连用可表示抽象概念，例如：

The latest(最近情况) is that he is going to run for election(参加竞选).

The very best(最好的结果) is yet to come.

2. 尚全荣主编《英语形容词》(河南教育出版社1987年8月第1版)p166：名词化的形容词表示一个抽象概念或某种特征时，其后往往跟单数动词。如：

The worst has come to the worst. 事情糟糕到了极点。

The most important is that they have finished the task in spite of the difficulties. 最重要的是，尽管有困难，他们还是完成了任务。 (笔者注：此句与所谓的“错句”(1)极其相似)

3. 贺立民编著《贺氏英文法全书》修订版(上册)(中国科学技术出版社1995年9月第1版)p376-377：the+最高级形容词=名词

Now that your fever has gone, the worst is over and you should soon be on your feet again.既然你高烧已退，危险期已经过去了，你应该很快就会康复了。

4. John Sinclair 主编COLLINS COBUILD English GRAMMAR (任绍曾主译：《英语语法大全》)(商务印书馆1999年1月第1版)p109：

He made several important discoveries. The most interesting of these came from an examination of an old manuscript. (笔者译：他有几项重要的发现，其中最为吸引人的是对旧手稿的鉴定。)

There are three types of ant-eater. The smallest lives entirely in trees. (笔者译：有3种类型的食蚁兽。最小的主要生活在树上。)

5. Randolph Quir等著A GRAMMAR OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH  (Second impression  with corrections 1973)p253 和Sidney Graeenbaum和Randolph Quirk著《朗文英语语法》(吉林教育出版社2003年4月第1版)p117-118：

Some adjectives have abstract reference when they function as noun-phrase heads. They include, in particular, superlatives, in which case we can sometimes insert thing in its abstract sense (Randolph Quirk等著《英语语法大全》( 翻译本)(华东师范大学出版社 1989年9月第1版)p580：有些形容词可以用作含有抽象意义的名词短语的中心词，特别是一些最高级形容词。在这种情况下，我们有时可以将含有抽象意义的一般性名词如thing加在后面)：

The latest (thing/news) is that he is going to run for re-election. (笔者译：最新的(事情/新闻)是，他将竞选连任。)

The best is yet to come. (笔者译：最好的还在后头。)

The very best is yet to come. (笔者译：真正最好的还在后头。)

6. 在 BNC(英国国家语料库http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk)和BUY-BNC BRTISH NATIONAL CORPUS (UK,1980s-1993) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) http://corpus.byu.edu/bnc/ 上至少有14例The most important is... 和 12例The most important was... ：

The most important is that the Guatemalan government is responding to international pressure. (笔者译：最重要的是，危地马拉政府正在回应来自国际社会的压力。)

The most important was that it offered far more opportunity professionally. (笔者译：最重要的是，它提供了更为专业的机会。)

笔者注：以上两例与所谓的“错句”(1)极其相似。

7. BYU: THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY

(http://corpus.byu/oed/) 上至少有14例The most important is... 和 1例The most important was... ：

1834  The most important is the Peguan.

8. 在TIME CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1923-2006) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) (http://corpus.byu.edu/time) 上至少有15例The most important is... 和 6例The most important was... ：

1929/12/16 Of Senor Patio's customers the most important is the National Lead Co. ...

9. BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1990-2009) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University) http://www.americancorpus.org/上至少有67例The most important is... 和29例The most important was... ：

2009 The most important was the March 1778 judiciary act, ...(笔者译：最重要的是在1778年3月司法行为，……

从以上可以看出：英国英语自1834年就有the most important之后不跟像thing之类的名词的用法；而美国英语y也自1929年就有the most important之后不跟像thing之类的名词的用法，且都仍在使用，从而证明在the most important根本就不需要跟名词，所谓“错句”中漏掉名词thing的说法是不成立的，即所谓“错句”是完全正确的。
